Moosehead Lake Ice: When It Freezes and How to Check It
By Scott Wilder
Short answer: we could not find a published ice-in record for Moosehead Lake. No earliest date, latest date, or median freeze-up date that we could cite. So we do not give one. Anything that sounds like a firm "Moosehead locks up on this date" is a guess.
No ice is ever 100% safe. Check it yourself.
Here is what does exist. The NSIDC Global Lake and River Ice Phenology Database has 172 Moosehead Lake rows, from the 1847-48 season through 2018-19. Every one of them has an ice-out date. None of them has an ice-in date. The freeze side of the record is blank. The ice-out dates are real, and we show them below. They tell you how long a winter runs. They do not tell you when first ice shows up.
One general fact is documented. A Wikipedia article on the lake says it becomes completely frozen over for about 5 months each year. That is not an official figure and it gives no dates, so treat it as a rough picture only.
So the honest plan is this. Watch the lake from late fall. Ask locals. Measure before you step on.
What the records show
| Source checked | Moosehead ice-in dates? |
|---|---|
| NSIDC Global Lake and River Ice Phenology Database | No. 172 rows, ice-on fields empty in all of them. |
| Maine state sources | We could not reach a Maine ice-in page. The state sites blocked or did not return a page. |
We checked these on October 29, 2026. If a real freeze-up record turns up, this guide will carry it with the source.
What the ice-out record does show
The NSIDC rows list the day the ice went out each spring. Across the 172 seasons with a date:
- Earliest ice-out: April 14, 1945.
- Latest ice-out: May 29, 1878.
- Middle of the pack: about May 7.
Recent years in the same table:
| Year | Ice-out |
|---|---|
| 2016 | April 23 |
| 2017 | May 1 |
| 2018 | May 8 |
| 2019 | May 9 |
The table stops at 2019, so we have nothing for the winters since. Ice-out also says nothing about the safe window in the middle of winter. Ice goes bad well before the day it is declared out.
About the lake
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife calls Moosehead Maine's largest lake. Its Moosehead region page lists the lake at 74,890 acres with a maximum depth of 246 feet. (Wikipedia gives 75,451 acres, a different figure, so treat any acreage as approximate.)
It is a big, deep, coldwater lake. A lake this size does not lock up the same way everywhere at once. The shore coves and the open middle freeze on different schedules, and we have no record that says how far apart.
What "ice in" means
An ice-in date is the day observers say a lake is frozen over and stays that way. It does not measure thickness. First ice along shore is not the same as safe ice out on the open water. Ice-in does not mean ice you can drive on.
Ice thickness minimums
Reference only. This is the Minnesota DNR guideline for new, clear ice, not a Maine table. Re-verify at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ice/thickness.html. We could not reach a Maine thickness page for this guide, so we show no separate Maine numbers.
- Under 4 inches: stay off.
- 4 inches: on foot.
- 5 to 7 inches: snowmobile or small ATV.
- 7 to 8 inches: side-by-side ATV.
- 9 to 10 inches: small car or SUV.
- 11 to 12 inches: medium SUV or small truck.
- 13 inches: medium truck.
- 16 to 17 inches: heavy-duty truck.
These numbers are for clear ice. White ice is only about half as strong, so the Minnesota DNR says to double the thickness. The same Minnesota page says ice is seldom the same thickness over a single body of water. It can be two feet thick in one place and one inch thick a few yards away.
What Maine wardens say
In a March 2026 news report, the Maine Warden Service advised checking that ice is at least four to six inches thick for walking. A game warden in that report said you could find 12 inches in one spot and two inches 20 feet away. The warden advised bringing a chisel, an auger, or an axe to confirm the depth, wearing ice safety picks, avoiding open water, and telling someone where you are going. Rocks showing on the ice can warm the water around them. The report also said ice is never 100% safe, and that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife does not recommend driving passenger cars or trucks on the ice.
If you do not know the ice, do not go.
A truck on Moosehead
A regional news report from March 2026 said a pickup truck broke through the ice on Moosehead Lake early on a Sunday during a thaw, while driving to a boat launch. The driver got out through the window. A warden in that story said ice that is dark, has air pockets, or has slush on top is not as structurally sound, and that shorelines and access areas can go thin long before the main body of water.
That is the part to remember. The risky spots are often the ones you cross to get onto the lake. A plowed road or a track in the snow is not proof of safe ice. Cracks and thin spots can sit right beside it.
How to check current ice
- Ask more than one local source for a current report. We found no official Moosehead ice report to point you to.
- Drill a hole and measure. Do it again every few steps.
- Measure clear ice. Do not count slush or white ice.
- Stay off open water, dark ice, and anywhere ice looks wet.
- Check access points and shorelines often. They can thin first.
- Wear a float coat. Carry ice picks and a rope.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
Early ice is the risk window. First ice looks solid and often is not. Do not follow a track onto the lake just because someone else did.
No ice is ever 100% safe. Check it yourself.
FAQ
When does Moosehead Lake freeze?
We found no ice-in record, so we cannot give a date range or median. The only dated record we found is ice-out, which runs from mid-April to late May. Check local reports and measure.
When does the ice go out on Moosehead Lake?
In the NSIDC record, ice-out ran from April 14 to May 29 over 172 seasons, with a middle date near May 7. The table ends with the 2019 season.
How thick should ice be to walk on?
The Minnesota DNR guideline is 4 inches of new, clear ice on foot. The Maine Warden Service advice in a March 2026 report was at least four to six inches. Use more for machines, and more again on white ice. Check it yourself.
Is it safe to drive a truck on Moosehead Lake?
Do not count on it. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife does not recommend driving passenger cars or trucks on the ice, per a March 2026 news report. A truck went through on Moosehead during one thaw.
Is Moosehead ice the same thickness everywhere?
No. It can change a lot over a short distance. Shorelines and access areas can be thin while the main lake is thicker. Measure often.
